Brakkeduine 4x4 - 29 August 2009 Trip Report
On 29 August 2009 we were joined by a group of people wanting to drive the Brakkeduine 4x4 Sand Trail. The trail is situated just outside Humansdorp, and therefore we met at the Engen garage at around 9:00.
Once everyone was there and all the paperwork was sorted out, we headed off towards Brakkeduine. Barto phoned me to tell me the road there is quite bad, and gave me directions of another route to take. This road was a lot better.
At Brakkeduine we deflated our tyres, and after a briefing by Choppie (trail guide) we headed into the trail. We were split into 2 groups because of the number of people that had joined us. This was done to make sure things run smoothly during the day and that people don't wait too long at certain obstacles.
Driving through the first part of the trail it was evident that it was a lot easier than before, and by the time we hit the sand dunes Choppie decided to take us on a section that no one has done before. Soon we had a vehicle struggle to get through the obstacle and people gathered around to see what was happening. One by one the vehicles either made it in several attempts or by taking the escape route. There were one or two that did make it on the first attempt.
From here we headed towards another section that we hadn't done before. This was another dune that some had problems with making the first time. Eventually we all made it and carried on throughout the rest of the trail.
At the Langbult we all took a rest while we watched as everyone had their go at the dune. Some made it, some didn't and some kept on trying and trying and still couldn't make it. After quite a while there and making sure everyone had gotten a turn we headed to the Roller Coaster. Only a few people opted to try this. We got some nice photo opportunities here with two vehicles approaching the dune quite aggressively.
The final stretch back to the camp site was through the lovely bush area they have. This is a nice relaxing drive to calm down from all the adrenaline on the dunes.
Choppie and his father Oom Johan were great hosts and offered us a trip on their boat. This was a 30 minute cruise along the dam while we enjoyed the scenery around it.
Once we docked a few people stayed behind to enjoy a braai while the rest headed towards home after a day of adventure and fun.
