International Beach Cleanup Day 2009
On 19 September 2009 it was International Beach Cleanup day. The three members of EC Offroad Adventures joined in and lent a helping hand to the Algoa Toyota 4x4 Club to clean up the beach at Bluewater Bay.
We met the members of the 4x4 club at 8:00 at the main beach area. Once we were briefed; by a lady from the Zwartkops Trust; the 7 vehicles headed off to go clean up the beach. We were asked to clean up from the Wells Estate area right up to the Coega harbor wall.
The area was split amongst the 7 vehicles (of which 3 were ours) and with bags in hand we started picking up all the rubbish. It was evident that compared to the previous year there was a lot less rubbish. We picked up countless bottle tops and other plastic containers.
The wind started coming up but we persisted and removed as much of the rubbish from the area as we could. In the distance we could see the hordes of kids that descended on the beach to help clean the areas they could access.
At the end of the day all the rubbish was dropped off at the main beach area to be collected by the municipality later on. It was great to see the amount of bags that were collected.
